The Sacrament of the Sick used to be seen as a sacrament for the dying. However, it is intended to reflect the great concern that Jesus had for people who were sick or disabled, those in spiritual need or those close to death. It is offered to all who are sick or disabled as well as to those who feel close to death. The sacrament is meant for the living and to be a great support for the sick person and for the family, friends or carers who are able to be present to share the sacrament The priest will offer this sacrament at a time which can be arranged in consultation with him. It may take place at home, in a Nursing Home or hospital. There is also a communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Sick which usually takes place annually at the 4.30 Sunday Mass. Dates are announced in the parish newsletter The Pastoral Care of the Dying gives a further opportunity to reflect the Lord's compassion during the struggle against illness. The Sacrament of Viaticum involves the reception of the Eucharist by the dying person and his or her family and prayers for the commendation of the dying The minister of the Viaticum is the priest or deacon, or an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, delegated by the Parish for the care of the dying.
